Bayern Munich v Chelsea: CL Final - The Biggest Club Game In World Sport?

It's the morning of the Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Chelsea and the players will be preparing themselves for what is the biggest club game in world football and possibly be the biggest club game in world sport.

In May 2009 the Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United replaced the Super Bowl for the first time ever as the most-watched annual sports event, according to a survey by Interpublic's Initiative Futures Sports and Entertainment.

While the TV audiences for both events continued to grow, the Barcelona v Manchester United game drew an audience of 109 million while the Super Bowl between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals drew 106 million in February that year.

The Super Bowl's audience was primarily domestic, the Champions League final faired better in the battle for viewers globally especially in the Asia-Pacific region.

3 years on and the Bayern v Chelsea final will be televised live on the free-to-air Fox network in the U.S. where, although still modest in comparison to Gridiron, viewership of the UEFA Champions League Final has exploded.

The 2011 final was the seventh straight year that English-language viewing increased in the U.S.  Over the last 10 years, the audience has increased almost 10-fold, from 264,000 viewers on ESPN in 2002 to 2.6 million on FOX in 2011.

The 2011 Champions League Final is the highest-rated and most watched in U.S. history, drawing an audience of 4.2 million viewers nationally. Significantly, the 2011 match on FOX and FOX Deportes also bettered the 2009 match, which featured the same Barcelona and Manchester United clubs, by +24% on viewership (4.2 million vs. 2.1 million).

The stage is set for a night of drama in front of a huge global audience - this could be one of the last stands for Chelsea's old guard (Drogba, Lampard and Terry have a combined age of 98) while Bayern are on home ground seeking a 5th European title and to join Real Madrid and Inter Milan in becoming only the 3rd side in history to do that on their own manor.

Let battle commence, may the best team win and the game itself live up to expectation.

Kick off 18.45 GMT

Player Fatigue Distorting European Football - World Football Academy

World Football Academy presents ground-breaking study demonstrating player fatigue is distorting European Football
  • Clear performance deficit suffered by teams playing after only two days’ recovery
  • Domestic title and European qualification outcomes affected
  • Study author, Raymond Verheijen, calls for mandatory three-day gap between matches
After studying the results of 27,000 professional matches, Verheijen said he had concluded that rest period of three days proved sufficient and did not give rise to any noticeable change in the chances during the second match.

The world players’ union FIFPro back recommendation

BERNE (Reuters) – FIFPro fully backed a study conducted by Dutch coach Raymond Verheijen which said that two days were insufficient and significantly affected a team’s chances of winning.

FIFPro’s technical director Thys Tummers said the devaluation of the Europa League could be a direct consequence of the two-day rest periods

“Clubs in the Europa League that want to gain a place in the highly lucrative Champions League increasingly favour the (domestic) competition in which they can gain qualification for the Champions League and rest their best players for the Europa League fixtures,” he said.

“This has been the consistent policy of Tottenham Hotspur throughout this season. The team was eliminated in the group stage.

“Twente Enschede, even though they had a lead of 1-0, fielded a weakened team for their return match at Schalke 04 and were eliminated.

“This undesirable effect could be avoided in the future by giving players and teams three days’ rest between two matches.”

Tummers said there were other reasons for following the recommendations.

“First, there is the question of fair play. By allowing one club only two rest days, you give the teams an unequal chance of a good result.

“In addition, we must take care that our players are not overused. First, because of the health of the players, but second, because the public want to see the players perform at their best.

“That doesn’t happen after just two rest days. It is plausible that the number of injuries is higher after only two rest days; a follow-up study is currently being held into this.”
